Tyga Launches New Artist Persona $TARFACE With Single 'GAVE U RACKS'

Tyga has introduced a new, fully-realized artist persona called $TARFACE, according to Billboard. The debut single "GAVE U RACKS" and its official music video are out now via Empire.

The project marks a distinct creative departure for the rapper. $TARFACE is a character-driven concept rooted in 1980s synth-wave, pop, R&B, and funk, designed to exist completely separately from his established catalogue. "I wanted this character and music to live on its own," Tyga says. "This needed to exist separately, to give me complete freedom creatively."

What is the $TARFACE project?

Rather than a standard release, $TARFACE is an alternate persona built around a fictional early-1980s world. The aesthetic draws from early-'80s Miami, featuring silk tailoring, white suits, and vintage luxury. The 10-track project is intentionally vocal-led, featuring more singing than rapping, with warm analogue synths and vintage production techniques. "I didn’t want modern drums or modern mixing," he explains. "I wanted it to sound authentic to that time."

The "GAVE U RACKS" music video, shot in Los Angeles, serves as the visual introduction to the persona. It establishes the look and mood as part of a larger story that will continue to unfold. The idea for $TARFACE first emerged while Tyga was developing his forthcoming film Baby, You’re a Star, inspiring him to dive deeper into the early part of the decade.

Tyga, born Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson in Compton, California, has a proven track record on the charts. Across his career, he has logged 41 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, including six top 10 hits.
