Will Smith's Ex-Friend Requests His Testimony in Jada Pinkett Smith Lawsuit
Amid allegations of a smear campaign, a self-filing plaintiff makes a procedural move against a Hollywood power couple.

Bilaal Salaam, a former friend of Will Smith, has formally requested the actor provide testimony in his $3 million lawsuit against Jada Pinkett Smith. According to court documents obtained by People and cited by Just Jared, Salaam is representing himself in the case and wants to depose his former friend under oath.
In an email sent on July 7, Salaam requested Will Smith's testimony for a deposition. Jada Pinkett Smith's legal team responded, stating "there is nothing to meet and confer about" regarding Smith, as he is not a party to the litigation. Her lawyers clarified, per the documents, that "Will has not been served a subpoena."
The Underlying Allegations
Salaam, also known as Brother Bilaal, alleges that Jada Pinkett Smith physically threatened him in September 2021. He claims the confrontation occurred in the lobby of the Regency Calabasas Common at a private birthday party for Will Smith. Salaam's lawsuit seeks $3 million in damages, alleging the incident caused emotional distress, reputational harm, financial loss, and physical health issues. He also accuses the couple of launching a smear campaign against him.
Jada Pinkett Smith has denied all wrongdoing. She previously filed an anti-SLAPP motion to dismiss parts of the lawsuit and scored a legal win in May. A court order at that time required Salaam to pay nearly $33,000 in attorney fees and legal costs to Jada.
The Current Legal Standoff
In newer court filings, Jada's attorneys also called out Salaam for "untimely responses" and said he had not provided enough evidence, including requested recordings and medical documentation. The court has thus far denied Salaam's request for a trial.
Will Smith has not been publicly drawn into the legal fray beyond Salaam's deposition request. The request highlights the challenges a self-represented plaintiff faces when pressing claims against a Hollywood power couple, with the gap between dramatic allegations and legal proof remaining wide.
