Seth Rogen Says Anne Hathaway Quit 'Knocked Up' Over a Graphic Birth Scene

Why did Anne Hathaway walk away from one of the biggest comedy hits of the 2000s? Seth Rogen says it came down to a matter of personal branding.

But first, it was offered to Anne Hathaway.

"It was Anne Hathaway who quit the movie," Rogen stated. Wilde asked, "Because of the crowning right? Is that real?" Rogen confirmed the long-standing industry rumor, attributing the decision to a specific, graphic scene. "She didn’t want the crowning of the baby to be visually representative," he recalled being told. "She felt that it was not her brand."

The scene in question features a prosthetic shot of a baby's head crowning during delivery, a moment Rogen acknowledged was "a tough one." He also speculated there might have been more to her exit, noting they had started rehearsals. "Maybe she was just like, ‘I don’t know if this is for me,’" he said. "I will take what she said at face value, which was the crowning."

Rogen gave Hathaway credit for trusting her instincts. "She had a sense, and she knew it was not for her," he said. "And history will tell … she has been right about a lot more things than I have over the years. So I think she was probably right." He added, "Katie Heigl was great."

The role of Alison, whose one-night stand with Rogen's character leads to an unexpected pregnancy, propelled Heigl to new fame. "Knocked Up" became a massive success, earning over $219 million worldwide and solidifying Judd Apatow's ensemble—including Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, and Jonah Hill—as comedy royalty.

Heigl's tenure with the film was also notable; she later publicly criticized its portrayal of women in a 2008 Vanity Fair interview, creating its own wave of headlines. Hathaway's career, of course, flourished on a different path, one seemingly less concerned with prosthetic childbirth scenes.
