The film world is mourning the loss of a gentle giant. Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor who brought paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant to life in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at age 78.

His family confirmed the news in a statement posted to his Instagram account on July 13, according to E! News and ABC News. "Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life," the statement read. "The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free."

Neill passed away in Sydney, Australia. The family expressed "deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care," and asked for privacy "as they navigate this immeasurable loss." According to The Guardian, he is survived by four children and eight grandchildren.

The news comes just months after the actor had publicly celebrated being cancer-free. Neill was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a stage 3 blood cancer, in 2022. He announced he was in remission earlier this year. In a March 2023 interview with The Guardian, he reportedly reflected on his diagnosis with characteristic wit and grace. "I can't pretend that the last year hasn't had its dark moments," he said, according to the outlet. "But those dark moments throw the light into sharp relief, you know, and have made me grateful for every day and immensely grateful for all my friends. Just pleased to be alive."

He also shared his unique perspective on mortality. "I'm not afraid to die, but it would annoy me," he quipped to the outlet, adding he hoped for another decade or two to see his grandchildren grow and his farm mature.

Neill's career spanned over five decades, beginning with his first major role at age 30 in the 1977 film Sleeping Dogs. While forever linked to Jurassic Park, his filmography was remarkably diverse, including roles in The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, and the TV series Peaky Blinders and The Tudors. Born in Northern Ireland, he moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, with his family when he was 7 years old.
