Meghan McCain Fires Back at 'Old and Ugly' Trolls With Raw Podcast Confession

Meghan McCain addressed a wave of body-shaming comments calling her “old and ugly” during the Wednesday episode of her podcast Citizen McCain, pushing back with unflinching honesty about aging, motherhood, and authenticity. "I am normally an Armadillo-skinned person, and there’s been a lot of commentary about how ‘old and ugly’ I am now," she said.

The segment, raw and unfiltered, showed McCain without professional hair or makeup — a look that, for some viewers, sparked harsh criticism. But McCain, 41, wasn’t having it.

“I’m 41 years old … I’m going to age. I’m going to get older. "I’m 41 years old … I’m going to age. I am fatter because I’ve had three kids," She didn’t sugarcoat it: her body has changed, her face shows time, and she’s not trying to hide any of it.

McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain and former co-host of The View, made it clear she doesn’t live for glamour. “I look different because I don’t have professional hair and makeup every day,” she explained. “I’d rather spend time with my children than do my hair and makeup,” she said, referencing her three children with husband Ben Domenech: Liberty, 5; Clover, 3; and Ransom, just 6 months old.

She admitted the vitriol caught her off guard. “It is a challenging cruelty to have people have such [opinions],” she said. "It is a challenging cruelty to have people have such [opinions]," While she described herself as normally “Armadillo-skinned,” this round of commentary stung. “This is the first time people have reacted, ‘Oh, Meghan looks a lot older.’ I am a lot older,” she acknowledged.

McCain also took aim at the expectation that women, especially public figures, must remain frozen in time. “I am no longer 5 years old with my dad running for Senate. I am no longer 22 years old [with] my dad running for president. I’m no longer 32 years old working for ‘The View.’ I’m 41 years old.”

She leaned into the absurdity of the criticism, joking she’ll “keep looking like [a] cryptkeeper” — but insisted she’s proud of who she is: a mother, a real person, and yes, a “motherf–king nepo baby.” Still, she stressed, “I’m a real person. I don’t live like that.”

McCain addressed the drug, saying Ozempic is “tempting,” but clarified she is not on it.

How We Got Here

The moment began earlier this week when a clip from Citizen McCain — a show McCain describes as a “real show” with “real people” — went viral. The conversation, focused on politics, was overshadowed online by comments fixating on McCain’s appearance. She speculated many critics had never seen the podcast before.

But the reaction revealed a deeper issue: the relentless scrutiny women face as they age, especially those once known for polished TV personas. McCain spent years in the spotlight on The View, where appearance was often part of the narrative. Now, on her own platform, she’s rejecting that script.

She made it clear: she won’t be compared to her younger self forever. “I’m not going to look the way I looked at ‘The View,’” she said. “We are all going to have to collectively come together [and agree] that I’m going to continue aging.”

And she and Wilkins aren’t backing down. “We will continue keeping it very real with you,” McCain promised.
