Matthew McConaughey's Son Levi Turns 18 — And Gets Dad's Blessing to Pursue Acting

What changed Matthew McConaughey's mind about his kids entering Hollywood? It seems fatherhood, and a little perspective, did the trick.

McConaughey's oldest son, Levi, officially became an adult on July 7, turning 18. The actor marked the occasion with a simple Instagram post, sharing a photo of the pair dressed in matching button-down shirts and jeans. "That’s a # buddy," he captioned it. "Enjoy and handle your new freedoms."

Those new freedoms, it turns out, include pursuing a career in acting—a path McConaughey once vowed to keep his children off.

That changed around the time he turned 40 and welcomed Levi with wife Camila Alves McConaughey. "I was like, ‘Where are you coming up with this idea you don’t want any of your kids to do it?’ It’d be a privilege if they would be able to."

This isn't a green light for nepotism, however. McConaughey is clear-eyed about the challenges his son will face. "There’s a line between entitlement and shame," he noted. "If you can look it right in the eye and deal with it, and if it works out, you’ll see, it’s a hell of a roller coaster." He emphasized the importance of Levi forging his own identity, separate from the industry: "It’s important that he has his own ownership of who he is and becomes. And [acting] will be a part of that if he continues to do it, part of finding his identity, but it can’t be his full identity."

Levi, who has grown up primarily in Austin, Texas, appears to share his father's pragmatic view. "As much as people can say, ‘You got this because of your father or your mother,’" he told People, "they can open the door, but then it’s going to be up to me to do my thing once I get in there. That’s on me."

The birthday post quickly sparked fan reactions online, with many noting the strong resemblance between father and son. While Levi's 18th birthday and McConaughey's supportive stance are confirmed, the specifics of Levi's first professional acting steps remain unconfirmed. He has not yet announced any formal projects or roles.

McConaughey and Camila Alves are also parents to daughter Vida, 16, and son Livingston, 13. It remains to be seen if his other children will also express interest in the family business, now that the gate has been officially opened.
