Jason Lewis Survived on Stolen Baguettes and Mustard Sandwiches in Paris
Long before playing Samantha's boyfriend Smith, the actor endured a real-life struggle in Paris, where his only meals were often stolen.

Before he was the charming model Smith Jerrod, Jason Lewis was a starving 21-year-old sleeping on floors in Paris. his co-star Kristin Davis’ podcast
"I starved for a while," Lewis told Davis. He described scouting out bakeries to steal a baguette, then heading to an outdoor cafe. He would take a pot of mustard from a cafe and dump it on the baguette, making mustard bread sandwiches for many of his meals. "So slept on floors," the actor explained, detailing a six-month stretch with almost no money for food.
A Six-Month Struggle
"So there was like a six-month starvation period where I could buy this one cucumber and this piece of cheese," Lewis recalled. His luck finally changed when he booked a modeling gig. "I think my first like decent money started coming in about a year and a half later," he said. Until then, he joked that at least it was easy to stay skinny.
Lewis, now 55, made his debut as Samantha Jones's boyfriend on the sixth and final season of "Sex and the City" in 2003. He reportedly reprised the role in the two subsequent films. His unvarnished account offers a stark contrast to the glamorous world his character Smith inhabited.
