Giuliana Rancic Invites Ex Jerry O'Connell to Her Podcast After He Recalls Their 2004 Breakup

"Have you guys heard? Apparently, my ex-boyfriend has been talking about our breakup publicly after 22 years," Rancic began. She wasn’t crying over spilled milk — but she wasn’t letting it go unaddressed, either. Her inbox, she said, had been “blowing up” since O’Connell’s July 19 appearance.

What Was Said

On Let’s Talk Off Camera, Jerry O'Connell, known for his role in Stand By Me, recounted the end of his relationship with Rancic. "I broke up with her through an intercom because Giuliana Rancic came to my condominium," he said. "I was not expecting Giuliana Rancic to come to said condominium."

He added, "I did not know you were coming. You can't come here unannounced." He emphasized that no one had a key — implying the relationship had already cooled — and said, "Notice no one had a key, so the relationship was not like that. There was no warning, and I didn't want someone coming in because I didn't want any confrontation."

O’Connell admitted another woman was in his home at the time, later confirmed to be Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell, whom he dated after splitting from Rancic.

The Other Side

Rancic didn’t dispute the visit — but she questioned his version of events. "Hmm, imagine that. And it seems that his memory is just a little fuzzy," she said in her July 23 Instagram video, raising her glass with a smirk.

She recalled a different farewell: one delivered in person, not through a speaker. In her 2016 memoir Going Off Script, she wrote that O’Connell said, “Nope, sorry home girl, things change, but you take care, OK?”

O’Connell, for his part, admitted he doesn’t remember the exact wording. But he did offer an apology: "Let me take this moment to apologize to Giuliana Rancic for being a terrible boyfriend. I was just not a great boyfriend."

The Reaction and the Invite

Rancic had options, she said. She could offer a bland, two-sentence response — “Blah, blah, blah, I wish him all the best” — or she could go deep.

"Or I could just take a deep dive and make it a 40-minute podcast," she mused.

Then came the invitation. "Jerry, you are so invited," she said, turning the moment into performance. "We'd love to have you. See you next week."

She was referring to her and husband Bill Rancic’s eponymous podcast, where she and her spouse of 18 years unpack pop culture and personal stories with a mix of humor and heart. The offer was public, playful — and open-ended.

How We Got Here

Rancic dated Jerry O'Connell from 2003 to 2004, and their split occurred in 2004. The breakup came just before O’Connell began dating Halliwell, and years before he married Rebecca Romijn in 2007.

Rancic moved forward, too. She married Bill Rancic in 2007 — the same year O’Connell tied the knot — and built a career as a television personality, author, and now podcaster.
