Dolly Parton Announces Broadway Musical, Updates Fans on Her Health
The country icon shares a 'dream come true' and a recovery update, all in one Instagram video.

Dolly Parton just gave fans a Broadway-sized announcement with a side of personal news. In an Instagram video on Tuesday, the legend revealed that her musical, "Dolly: A True Original Musical," is officially heading to Broadway, opening on her birthday, January 19, 2027. She also provided an update on her health, stating she is recovering but not yet ready for stage performances.
"Now, this isn’t about a story about sparkle and shine on the outside," Parton said in the video. "It’s about where I really come from, what I’ve lived, what I’ve lost, what I’ve loved and how I’ve found my way." She explained the production will be told in her "own words and through the music that’s been part of [her] every step of the journey." According to the musical’s website, the production will feature her greatest hits, including “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You,” “9 to 5” and “Coat of Many Colors,” alongside new songs she's written for it. "This really is a dream come true," she added. "I can’t wait to share it with all of you."
The musical, directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, will begin previews in New York City this December. Pre-sale ticket access starts on Wednesday, according to Page Six. While Parton is the creative force behind the show, she confirmed she will not be performing in it.
This career milestone comes just months after Parton reportedly announced the cancellation of her "Dolly: Live in Las Vegas" residency due to ongoing health issues. In a social media video in May, she told fans, "I have some good news and a little bad news. The good news is I’m responding really well to meds and treatments and I’m improving every day." The residency had been initially postponed last year.
Her Broadway announcement, therefore, serves a dual purpose: it's a major professional reveal and a reassurance to fans about her well-being. The musical first debuted in Nashville last year, and has since undergone changes, according to Page Six.
For now, fans can look forward to experiencing Parton's life story on stage, even if the icon herself won't be in the spotlight.
