Scrubs Season 2 Adds Rachel Bilson, Expands Neil Flynn Role as Two Characters Depart

ABC's Scrubs revival is adding Rachel Bilson and expanding Neil Flynn's role for its second season, according to Deadline. The cast shakeup also sees two recurring characters from the first season departing.

Who is joining the cast for Season 2?

Rachel Bilson, who guest-starred in the Season 1 finale as hospital visitor Charlie, will return for a multi-episode arc in Season 2. Showrunner Aseem Batra told Deadline the storyline will explore the feelings her character's presence stirs up for J.D. and Elliot. Neil Flynn, who reprised his original role as The Janitor for a couple of scenes in the first season's finale, is also set for a recurring role in the new season.

Which characters are not returning?

Two prominent recurring characters from Season 1 will not be back. Joel Kim Booster, who played scheming attending physician Dr. Kevin Park, and X Mayo, who played Charge Nurse Raymond, are not listed among the returning cast. Batra noted that Dr. Park served as J.D.'s main rival in the first season.

Who is definitely coming back?

The show's core trio—Zach Braff as J.D. Dorian, Donald Faison as Christopher Turk, and Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid—are all returning as series regulars. Original fan favorites John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes are also expected to recur, pending scheduling with their other series. Intern Ava Bunn has been promoted to series regular for the new season.

The status of other original cast members remains uncertain. While Ken Jenkins, who played Dr. Bob Kelso, remains on the showrunner's wish list, he has not been confirmed for Season 2. Batra lists Jenkins, along with Johnny Kastl and Scott Foley, on her wish list for the revival.
