“Ronan Bennett has created a gripping, provocative and action-packed drama that feels both epic in scale and strikingly relevant,”
Paddy Considine, America Ferrera, Alex Hassell, and Kit Harington will lead the cast of the upcoming thriller series “Army of Shadows,” according to Variety. The project, from “Top Boy” creator Ronan Bennett, has begun filming in multiple European cities.
Lisa Gunning, whose recent directing work includes “Black Doves,” will direct all six episodes of the series. Production is underway in Manchester, Liverpool, London, and Paris.
What is the 'Army of Shadows' series about?
The series is a reimagining of Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1969 film and Joseph Kessel’s book of the same name. Bennett’s version transposes the story to a near-future, authoritarian Britain. The official synopsis describes a country where “the flags are different, the news is careful, and nobody says certain things out loud anymore.” The plot follows a former soldier known only as Berry as he builds a secret resistance network. He is joined by “a soldier, a student, a radiographer and a journalist.”
Who is making the series?
“Army of Shadows” is a reunion for Bennett and U.K. broadcaster Channel 4, which aired his breakout hit “Top Boy.” The series is co-produced by Studiocanal and Two Cities Television. Channel 4’s interim head of drama, Gwawr Lloyd, called the drama “gripping, provocative and action-packed.” She said it “asks powerful questions about freedom, resistance and the choices people make when democracy is under threat.”
