Noah Wyle Talks 'The Pitt' Season 3 Shift, Fan Backlash and Hollywood Economics

Noah Wyle discussed fan discourse around his character and teased a seasonal shift for the upcoming third season of "The Pitt" in a recent interview. The actor and executive producer spoke on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast about his role on the HBO Max medical drama.

Wyle knows some viewers were critical of his character, Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, after the character's personal struggles led him to lash out at colleagues in Season 2. He tries not to pay attention to the online conversation. "The blending of the line between actor and part that I sometimes see, where an actor is blamed for the behavior of a character, or where a character’s dialog stops being representative of the character and starts being representative of the creative team — as if they’re saying something that they believe through this particular vehicle — I think gotten a little blurry," he told Variety.

What is coming in The Pitt Season 3?

"We wanted to play with a different season," he said. "We just came off of hot July 4, so it seemed appropriate to plot it a little into a different season." He explained that the change will bring a new aesthetic and different kinds of medical cases, influenced by colder weather and slick roadways. The shift also aligns with the story, as Robby will have been away from the hospital for a while.

How did fans react to Season 2?

Wyle understands the negative reaction stemmed from disappointment that Dr. Robby was "acting less heroic" than in the first season. He clarified that the storyline was intended to show a character experiencing a mental health crisis. "We were trying to show somebody who was going through a mental health crisis and was behaving irresponsibly, unprofessionally and out of character for himself," Wyle said. He believes this larger picture was misinterpreted by some as the character simply being cruel.

Despite the vocal criticism, Wyle says the overall reaction to the mental health journey has been positive. "It’s incredibly gratifying to be on a show that has resonance and is being spoken about at all," he added.

How is The Pitt impacting Hollywood?

A significant portion of the discussion focused on the show's production in Los Angeles. Wyle is a vocal advocate for keeping film and television work local. "I’m looking at it from the standpoint of somebody who has grown up in and around this industry and befriended people who are generations deep in this industry who’ve watched it really crater over the last couple years," he said.
