“I learned a lot about what you don’t need and getting to things quicker.”
Katie Dippold has begun writing the second season of her Apple TV+ series "Widow's Bay." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the creator confirmed the writers' room started earlier this week, with filming targeted for next year.
Dippold discussed the project at a Comic-Con panel. The series premiered in April 2026 and quickly became one of television's buzziest shows, going on to land 19 Emmy Award nominations.
Reflecting on the process, Dippold said she learned to streamline the storytelling. "I learned pretty quickly in making it," she said. "In the edit, I just could see, ‘Oh, you actually didn’t need any of this stuff anyway.’ I learned a lot about what you don’t need and getting to things quicker." She noted the initial scripts were longer and dense, requiring last-minute cuts for time.
The goal is to begin filming next year. Dippold stated the writers' room will be working for the next 20 weeks. The series stars Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a supposedly cursed New England island, alongside Kate O'Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Stephen Root.
Dippold said she did not know about the Season 2 renewal until just before it was announced publicly. "But I was still always hoping and thinking about it," she added. The show blends comedy and horror, a line critic Angie Han highlighted in her review for The Hollywood Reporter, writing, "At its best, Widow's Bay highlights the blurry line between comedy and horror."
