Did 'Ransom Canyon' Predict the Kit and Lauren Romance Before Fans Did?

In Season 2 of the Netflix series, now streaming, the show ignited a firestorm with a taboo love triangle between Lauren (Lizzy Greene), Kit (Casey W. Johnson), and his younger brother Lucas (Garrett Wareing). And according to creator April Blair, the decision to go there wasn’t just a gamble — it was a gut call based on undeniable chemistry.

Blair revealed in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly that the spark between Kit and Lauren first caught her attention during the first cut of the tornado episode in Season 1. "I saw the first cut of the tornado episode and I was like, ‘We need to do something with Kit and Lauren. I think there’s a lot of chemistry there.'"

That moment became the seed for one of Season 2’s most talked-about arcs. Despite Lauren being in a relationship with Lucas, her emotional connection with Kit deepens — blurring lines, testing loyalties, and setting the stage for a slow-burn romance that’s as dangerous as it is magnetic.

How the Writers’ Room Made the Call

The idea wasn’t a slam dunk. According to Blair, the writers’ room was divided on whether to pursue the storyline. But she was convinced. "I was like, ‘Messy is great. Let’s just try it.’ But I definitely think once the show aired and we saw all the people shipping them I was like, ‘We’re on the right track,'"

And while the team cared about fan reaction, the truth is: Season 2 was already in motion before Season 1 even premiered. "Season 2 of the writers’ room began months before season 1 aired. So we definitely care what the fans think and are listening but by the time the season aired, we were well on our way with writing season 2,"

That meant the decision to explore Kit and Lauren’s connection wasn’t a response to audience demand — but fan enthusiasm did serve as validation. As viewers began shipping the pair online, Blair admitted: “We’re on the right track.”

Still, the creators aren’t ignoring the audience. According to Us Weekly, Blair added that they “definitely take it into account,” hinting that future seasons could be shaped by real-time reactions.

Cast Reactions: From Hesitation to Full Embrace

Casey W. Johnson, who plays Kit, admitted he initially resisted the intimacy of the tornado scene. Aware of the familial stakes, he approached it with caution. "I remember specifically going into the tornado episode and being like, ‘I don’t want it to feel intimate. This is my younger brother’s girlfriend so I don’t want it to be a thing,'"

But once the episode aired and the chemistry became impossible to deny, Johnson acknowledged the emotional authenticity that formed the foundation of Kit and Lauren’s bond. According to Us Weekly, he said it was “just two people having a genuine vulnerability with each other and that grew and that was more than just that was what connected them.”

Garrett Wareing, who plays Lucas, took a lighter approach. Joking about the drama, he reportedly said: "The writers listen y’all! And if it’s drama that you want then it’s drama you are going to get! Careful what you wish for"

Privately, though, he’s all in. According to Us Weekly, Wareing admitted: “Secretly, I love [the love triangle]. It’s dangerous and makes for a very engaging watch.”

Despite the tension, Wareing hasn’t given up on Lucas and Lauren. In the current season, Lucas tells Lauren, “One day we’ll be OK,” during a poignant goodbye. And the creators have teased that the couple could be the “Quinn and Staten” of their era — a nod to iconic TV pairings.

Johnson, for his part, didn’t realize the show could explore them as a couple. Wareing joked that if they don’t end up together, he will never believe in love again.

The sibling love triangle remains unresolved. No confirmation yet on how long it will last or who Lauren will ultimately choose in future seasons.
