The BBC has acquired the thriller series "Kabul," starring the late Eric Dane, according to a report from Variety.

It features one of Dane's final roles alongside an ensemble cast that includes Shervin Alenabi, known for "Tehran," Jonathan Zaccaï, Thibault Evrard, and Valentina Cervi. The series dramatizes the chaotic evacuation from Afghanistan in August 2021 as U.S. troops withdrew and the Taliban returned to power.

What is 'Kabul' about?

The series is set against the backdrop of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Its synopsis describes the desperate situation on August 15, 2021, as the Taliban entered the city. It follows the Nazany family and other civilians forced to flee, while French police, Italian diplomats, German military, and American intelligence services attempt to coordinate a rescue under the threat of an ISIS attack.

Nick Lee, the BBC’s head of program acquisition, called the show "a tragedy of the highest stakes" in a statement reported by Variety. "A warzone story which is propelled by the real ticking clock of the evacuation that was just five years ago this summer," Lee said.

When and where can I watch it?

The series will then air linearly on the BBC Four channel beginning August 15. The acquisition was made from global sales agent Mediawan Rights.

The series is produced by France’s 24 25 Films and Cinétévé. It is directed by Olga Chajdas ("Imago") and Kasia Adamik ("No Escape") from a screenplay by Olivier Demangel, Thomas Finkelkraut, and Joey Lavy.
