BBC Acquires Kabul Drama Series Starring the Late Eric Dane

The BBC has acquired the upcoming drama series Kabul, which is set during the 2021 American withdrawal from Afghanistan, according to Deadline. The show features one of the final performances from actor Eric Dane, who died earlier this year.

Kabul dramatizes the chaotic events of August 2021, as American troops withdrew from the city and the Taliban entered. The story follows the Nazany family, civilians forced to flee, while French police, Italian diplomats, German military, and American intelligence services attempt to coordinate a mass evacuation under the threat of an ISIS attack.

Who else stars in the series?

Dane plays a character named Martin. The international cast also includes Darina Al Joundi, Shervin Alenabi, Vassilis Koukalani, Hannah Abdoh, Jonathan Zaccaï, Gianmarco Saurino, and Jeanne Goursaud. The series was directed by Olga Chajdas, and written by Olivier Demangel, Thomas Finkielkraut, and Joey Lavy.

When will it premiere?

The series is set to land on the BBC next month. It is produced by Mediawan for the European Alliance of broadcasters, which includes ZDF, Rai, and France Télévisions. Nick Lee, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, said in a statement: "Kabul is a tragedy of the highest stakes. A warzone story which is propelled by the real ticking clock of the evacuation that was just five years ago this summer. Global politics remain complex, but Kabul dramatises the biggest view of history through the smallest window of a human family." Global sales for the series are handled by Mediawan Rights.
