Michael Tiddes Discusses 'Scary Movie' Revival and Director's Cut Release

Director Michael Tiddes has detailed the release of an extended director's cut for the 2026 'Scary Movie' revival, according to an interview on Variety's 'Daily Variety' podcast.

Tiddes, whose past feature directing credits include 2017's 'Naked,' 2019's 'Sextuplets' and 2024's 'Half Baked: Totally High,' began his career as an assistant to brothers Marlon and Shawn Wayans.

What's in the director's cut?

"There’s over 30 minutes of bonus features and an extended cut that is 13 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, and it features all new scenes not seen in theaters," Tiddes said. He described the additional content as containing more jokes and chaos, along with an unseen alternate ending.

Why was this revival significant?

Tiddes explained the project held personal meaning for both him and the Wayans brothers. He noted the brothers had lost the rights to the property in the early aughts amid a dispute with then-Miramax chief Harvey Weinstein. "This movie was a fantastic full circle for both of us because the Wayans had lost this franchise a number of years ago and now rightfully gotten it back," Tiddes said. He added that being asked to take over the franchise was a career highlight.

Tiddes also expressed enthusiasm for providing extensive bonus materials, citing his own love for DVD extras and director commentaries from the 80s and 90s as his informal film school.
