Destin Daniel Cretton Discusses the Personal Stakes of 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has detailed the personal connection he found to guide his upcoming Marvel film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, in an interview with Rolling Stone. Cretton, who previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, returns to the MCU with the fourth Tom Holland-led Spider-Man movie, set for release on July 31, 2026.

The film picks up from the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker’s identity was magically erased from everyone's memory. Cretton told Rolling Stone that this isolated, work-obsessed version of Peter was the key to his involvement. "I’ve been in that place in life," Cretton said. "I know what that feels like to trick yourself into thinking that is your destiny to be alone and to work."

Cretton explained they studied real-world footage to capture a true sense of vertigo and speed. "We’re primarily looking at GoPro footage on YouTube," Cretton said.
