Anne Hathaway Confirms Princess Diaries 3 Story Breakthrough After Starting Over

Anne Hathaway confirmed the script for "The Princess Diaries 3" was scrapped before a recent story breakthrough.

The actress gave an update on the long-gestating sequel in a new interview. She revealed the team had to start over with a new creative direction for the film.

What did Anne Hathaway say about the script?

Hathaway shared the news while promoting Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey on SiriusXM's Radio Andy. "I think we had a story breakthrough," she said. "I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one."

Who is making the movie?

According to a 2024 report from Deadline, director Adele Lim is attached to helm the third installment. The screenplay is being written by Flora Greeson, with producers including Debra Martin Chase, Naia Cucukov, and Melissa Stack.

When will filming start?

Hathaway indicated her personal schedule is currently a factor. "I’m busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing when exactly I can make Princess Diaries 3," she said. Earlier this year, she told Entertainment Weekly the team was "constantly working" on the sequel.

The original film, directed by Garry Marshall, starred Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who discovers she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. A sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, followed in 2004.
