Tim Blake Nelson's new film, 'The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd,' starring Scoot McNairy and Amanda Seyfried, will premiere later this year, according to sources speaking to The Hollywood Reporter. The drama marks a major showcase for its two leads, who are unlike you've ever seen them before.

What is the film about?

The film examines the complex relationship between Karen, a new English teacher at an Oklahoma prison, and Wilson, an incarcerated student drawn to her. Seyfried plays Karen, who is trapped in an abusive marriage, while McNairy plays the title character, Wilson Shedd. The story unfolds nonlinearly across three timelines, anchored by what the director describes as an "evolving, complex, ultimately tragic" bond.

How did the cast approach the intense material?

Both stars described the filming experience as uniquely demanding. "I do remember adamantly wanting to get a haircut after this job," McNairy said of the intense role. Seyfried praised Nelson's direction, stating, "I trust him more than I trusted any director I’ve ever worked with hands down." Remarkably, despite the film hinging on their dynamic, Seyfried and McNairy only overlapped on set for three or four days. "It was a bummer, but there was something kind of great about it because I really didn’t know him," Seyfried said. "We had to work that much harder."

What inspired the story?

Nelson was first inspired to write the project over a decade ago, following the national obsession with the prison escape at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. His idea evolved into a fictionalized story that explores deep themes. "This movie is meant to be dealing with, on every level, the things that we as humans are capable of doing to one another," Nelson said. The film also draws literary inspiration from authors like Flannery O’Connor.

The ensemble cast also includes Wunmi Mosaku, Elizabeth Marvel, Missi Pyle, William Jackson Harper, and Grant Harvey. Nelson, a published novelist, also appears in the film.
