Gabriel 'Fluffy' Iglesias Receives Generation Award at Just For Laughs Festival

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, the first comic to sell out Dodger Stadium, received the Generation Award at the Just For Laughs comedy festival awards show in Montreal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the event celebrated a roster of comedians with a blend of tender tributes and the expected sharp wit.

Lisa Gilroy, Chris Fleming, and Atsuko Okasuka were also feted at the ceremony, which was hosted by comedian Tone Bell.

What did the winners say?

In his acceptance, Iglesias offered advice to aspiring comedians. “If I can leave you with anything, it’s do (comedy) because you love it,” he told the audience. “Do it because it makes you feel good to be on stage in front of people, making people smile, making people laugh, making people forget, making people feel good.” He added a characteristically Fluffy caveat: “And if you do that well, you’re going to drive a nice car one day. But don’t be in a rush.”

Other winners brought their own distinct voices. Lisa Gilroy, honored as the rising comedy star of the year, declared, “I fucking love being Canadian.” She joked about the shared motivation in the room: “I make comedy for the same reason so many of us in this room make comedy, because we’re deeply, deeply mentally ill, and nothing will ever fix that.”

Chris Fleming, who won comedy performance of the year for his HBO special, took playful aim at the host city. “My one note about Montreal, though, if I was an acting teacher, I’d say the performance of French rings false. I don’t buy it,” he joked.

Were there any other notable moments?

Iglesias returned to the stage later to introduce Bruce Hills, who received the JFL Legacy Tribute Award. Iglesias quipped about his own role in the presentation. “I’m basically here because Dave Chappelle said no. Bill Burr said no. Kevin Hart said no. So in keeping with tradition, here’s another Mexican doing a job nobody else wanted,” he said. He then sincerely thanked Hills for giving him and countless others a career break.

Host Tone Bell also got in his licks, referencing the festival's recent financial history. “I got here last night, and they’re pushing me out in the morning,” Bell said, joking about the newly-resurrected festival's diligence with its books after emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2024.

The night balanced these barbs with genuine appreciation for the craft, framing success as a collective effort. This sentiment was echoed by the veteran Hills in his own emotional speech.
